Even though all of us who were so engaged into, nothing compared to what that value was, what that emotion was too. But talk about that dynamic leading through that. And maybe 15 years ago, when I was working in Madison Square Garden, my brother was in a parent conference with Mark Lasry and Mark might have mentioned that he wants to look at some teams. Feigin was a four-year member of the men's soccer team as a midfielder during his undergraduate career at Franklin & Marshall. We have large sections that you never think about 10 years ago that people hang out at a bar, never have a seat, never, standing room only. Peter Feigin: Listen. And have you seen that shift a little bit in the city since Milwaukee is kind of spearheading that, the Bucks? It's like how do we, between us, like as you know. But, boy, you talk about how you go to sleep like the night, a night in March, in the middle of March last year thinking like, "Oh, my God. Daniel connected the partners with Peter, then chief marketing and revenue officer of Deluxe Entertainment Services Group, to analyze the franchise from a sales and development angle. And one of the incredible things that Milwaukee did not have was kind of a meeting place. It's like how do I hold my impulsive self to shut the hell up. Got it. How do you balance a world and a sports world, especially, thats become so excited about, what Billy Beane created in terms of data analytics and the importance of numbers with the human capital element. What would you be doing? So, how do you navigate the ship through waters you've never been through before? I need socks and I know we're not making them. Peter Feigin is riding his Peloton bike. This was just the very beginning, the first thought was, "Oh, boy. That's like, that's today's kind of like, "What are we focused on?". Then you mirror that off the court. I said, "Man, make sure you represent." Peter: its not the biggest, but it just talks about how special when you talk about in a small market, and we try to coalesce with the Brewers and the Packers as much as we can to be like the strength of these three pro teams and their players and their coaches and our coaches and GM spend a lot of time with the coaches and GMs at the Packers, which is just great. Right now, its very hard to figure out and understand where its going, because this is the wild West. Peter: The ice cream truck. Peter Feigin: And then I think, the bigger picture is we really have to accelerate becoming the world's team. You didnt study sports. And as Marc kind of ventured out over a decade ago . And if a new player does not endear himself to the group, it tends to reflect poorly on whoever invited him in the first place. And I really do think like so powerful and so great, because it really accelerated the chipping away of this systematic racism, if nothing else, brought it to the forefront and the top of discussion in mind. Because are they getting too sophisticated too early in terms of their value enterprise? Well the goal on the court is we want to win a championship. And I knew who Arthur Ashe was, but I wasn't a big tennis guy and my job was basically being Arthur Ashe's right hand person through. Literally the world, like across European soccer, across everything, for people to at least stop and think. I think one of the big skills is, I definitely do not know the answer to everything and if youre able to Basically I do think I can solve anything. Youve got Wes Edens who has probably started up dozens of companies in private equity and has an unbelievable kind of entrepreneurial spirit. We had this, I think it was an intern, said to us like, Well, we should, have you read about ghost kitchens? Of course were sitting there going like, eh, kind of like, we dont know what the hell youre talking about. It would be fun to own a hundred McDonalds franchises and you guys would be great at that. And people like Wisconsinites are close to imagine a fast-talking New Yorker coming in and kind of standing on the soapbox promising the world and kind of great change and a great building. We were literally refining, cared about all the cookies and stories in it and stuff. In many ways, you were doing a startup when you came to Milwaukee with your partners. How we build our brand and how we build our awareness and likability around that, it's just kind of one of those no-brainers, too. We had weekly calls. And because Blake was in our backyard, like literally in Kenosha, which as you know is so close, it became personal. "Can you imagine? Like Jeff Eisenband on Facebook. Peter: Probably, now with the way interesting curriculum has expanded and fun case studies and like where schools are. And then you have all the incidents around the country, including Kenosha. John: Talk about and want you to share a couple of thoughts about Warren Buffett and that whole deal. All right. It all starts with the answer, right? Peter: Yeah, I will just tell you that was one of the most fun dreamlike things for us ever. We always tell people, listen, if you want to work here, youre going to have to collaborate with people. Are they all going to be important or do you see one heavier leaning heavier than other, in terms of future revenue opportunities that are credible and consistent? And I think my job is kind of the overall business and operations to go is a rapport with them that again, in the best case I always think an NBA player, this is a human business. We are brand marketing sales people. Peter: You got it running the 70s, 80s and 90s, yep. I thought Id hit the jackpot, Feigin said. Michael Red: The family, I know, that's big for you in that culture and what you try to create as a culture is family. I think it starts with human capital, but it really starts with road mapping out each little thing. And it was a fantasy. Talk about that nuance because like you were saying, from the outside in, you could say all the players have it made. Michael Red: You talked about Coach Bud and the whole team organization, which I think Coach Bud has done a terrific job thus far. John: Hey, Peter. Like its going to streaming, its going to over the top, that is a huge change from all these local teams depending and getting guaranteed large dollar values for regional sports deals. After college, Dan Feigin got a job at Trevor teaching English and coaching sports, which meant one important thing: He had access to a gymnasium in New York City, where indoor hoops are more precious than parking spaces. Okay. It keeps on changing, but we've got to be able to pivot and understand when we're out of balance. "That was my dream of dreams when I was a kid: Oh, my God.. How does this work? He's bigger, Giannis is even outside of the country than he is inside of it. We've got one of the global sports stars in the world. But was like loved and I think Im addicted. What advice can you share backwards to the young people out there that want to live your journey or something close to it? John: In terms of watching the young generation now come up, has NIL and the advent of NIL do you believe thats going to have a positive or negative effect as you continue to recruit players in the future? Before we started this interview, you took a little break and said, John excuse me for a second because someone very special stopped by. Talk a little bit about the ice cream truck, the ice cream man. We have resources, we back them up, whatever you need, it's part of it. I always think it comes back. Talk about that. In a Q&A with The Undefeated, Milwaukee Bucks president Peter Feigin talked about resuming the season, the business lost due to COVID-19, and much more. Michael Red: And then with all that going on around you, I mean, navigating the waters from a business standpoint. I think if nothing else, it changes the awareness, the sophistication, and the business operations of the way players will position themselves and the way theyll market themselves. Peter: Well, its having like Ive always said, people talk about their personal board of directors and what that is and I had the advantage and still have the advantage of my mother being the best consultant you could possibly have. Antetokounmpo signed a four-year, $100 million extension in September 2016 (right before his first All-Star season) that will keep him under contract in Milwaukee through 2020-21. Ill tell you how it I got the offer, the conversation and we play a pickup game of basketball every Saturday for 20 years with the same guys. John: Was Sonny Werblin still around, or was that the same? You and I go back since you came back to the Bucks or since you came to the Bucks and you guys have been incredible to me over the years since you've been in a position in Milwaukee and really grateful of our friendship over the years and how the organization has welcomed me back to the organization. But kind of like would say I kind of got to play through high school college with just grit and will and really like persistence and relentlessness. My wife and I have known each other since high school. You start and now talk about the major, like you said, you got a great human capital person, you got a great CFO. There's always joking, a lot of joking and the team, the organization from what I've heard and know of you is that they really, really, really appreciate your leadership within the organization. Is this coming? He captained. John: Your mom was part of the George Lois generation and Jerry Della Femina and then Donny Deutschs father David Deutsch. I do." But I think, those are the things that like, yes, you can always pay people. Lasry and Feigin met some 20 years ago when Feigin's identical twin brother, Daniel, was coaching Lasry's sons Alex and Zach for an elementary school basketball team in New York City.. And to think it all started at a private school in New York City. So, for all the listeners, I played in Milwaukee for 11 years over a decade and had an incredible time there. God, I love it as a case study. Thats a stain on your career, Dan Feigin said. The future for the Bucks, championship, championship, championship, and obviously getting fans back at the games. Our expectation is to win a championship. I've known him from a rookie to where he is now and Khris obviously. Peter: I went to Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He loved you guys and what the conversation is.". Peter: Yeah, I think I have this, my own personal craziness is I love to collect people. When he called Milwaukee "the most segregated, racist place I've ever experience in my life" in 2016, Feigin was just being a straight shooter intent on improving the neighborhood. Michael Red: I'm a big believer that the healthier the person, the healthier the product, healthier the business. How do we get the people to try and start the journey to professionalize and really build a gold standard operation. So, thank you for being on the cast today. How do you balance with that and how do you create that menu that people can pick and choose from? Youre physically building an arena, a district, a template for success. Feigin is in charge of divvying up the five-man teams at the start of the session and typically includes himself on the strongest squad. You end up with a Jew holiday, who is this incredible, understated, all star. Peter: Then I think youre, listen, viewer consumption, what youre talking about is whether you put on an Oculus or whether youve got five screens going up, people are now watching short form video in five to 20 second increments to absorb a game. So, these guys are thrown into a world where they're responsible for everything, they assume they know everything, and what their experience is. Which is a huge opportunity. Peter Feigin: Well, I think, like you talked about the opportunity for a great historic organization like this to embrace a former Olympian, it's all-star, like a person who's current in the game and really is an asset. Thats just what a joy. And more importantly, kind of like building such a strong infrastructure with other people. Peter Feigin: So, my job is pretty simple, like how do I build the trust with them? Ive been really lucky. But youve not only lived the dream but also climb to the mountain and very few win a championship. Then I think as we keep exploring and kind of whats happening with online gambling and whats happening with NFTs and whats happening in the ticketing business, that it all evolves with technology, will be really interesting. I watch it. Do you want to be in a place where people are having fun and were trying to get rid of all the toxic. And it's kind of as an adult got me to a place where I desperately want our youth to get exposed to things they wouldn't normally get exposed to because that's how they learn what's out there. During a media car wash in NYC in December, Feigin opts for a sweater, not a suit and tie. And you know what their experience is? And I think with time, you certainly kind of can take that. Im probably like someone who gives everything away. So, for us, it goes back to constantly being really honest and forthright about where you are and how you can improve.
